Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted multiple consignments of illicit drugs concealed in baby food tins and clothes destined for the United States and the United Kingdom.
The interceptions occurred at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and a courier firm in Lagos.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi reported on Sunday that 36 parcels of cannabis, weighing 18.5 kilograms, were hidden in six cartons of baby food tins at the Lagos airport.
The consignment, destined for the UK, led to the arrest of freight agent Salaudeen Abiola. Further investigations in Ibadan resulted in the arrest of Bello Folu, the sender of the cargo.
In addition, five shipments of opioids and other substances, including promethazine, pentazocine, diazepam, tramadol, and morphine, were intercepted. These shipments, hidden in clothes and other items, were also headed to the US and UK.
At the Tincan port in Lagos, NDLEA operatives recovered 77 packages of Canadian Loud cannabis from four vehicles imported from Canada. Two suspects, Salami Sunday and Lekan Atoyebi, were arrested.
Additionally, significant quantities of codeine syrup and other drugs were seized in various operations across Lagos, Ondo, and Edo states, leading to multiple arrests.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa commended the efforts of the officers and urged them to continue their work with the same zeal.
