Illegal Mining Activities: Ondo Security Task Force Arrests 12 Suspects

• August 10, 2024

The Ondo State Security Task Force, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, arrested twelve individuals on Thursday for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.

The arrests are part of a broader effort to curb illegal extraction of solid minerals, which authorities believe is linked to criminal activities such as kidnapping.

Mr. Olugbenga Atiba, the Senior Special Assistant on Security to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, announced the arrests at the 32 Artillery Brigade barracks in Akure.

He emphasized that the operation was a joint effort by various security agencies to eliminate illegal mining in the state.

Atiba noted that security personnel have been deployed across Ondo’s three senatorial districts, focusing on areas where illegal mining is suspected.

He also revealed that some key perpetrators come from Niger and Zamfara states.

The state government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, is working to address the involvement of local leaders in these illegal activities.
